Nazaré (Lisboa region)– Arte Xávega na Nazaré (Ancient Fishing Art) - This is a recreation of the old way of fishing in the 30’s at Praia da Nazaré. The captain of the boat starts by calling for the crew of a typical rowing boat; nets are cast out into the sea and later they are hauled in. The fish are sold on the beach.

Lisboa – Rock in Rio Lisboa “For a Better World”During 5 days the city of Lisboa will come alive with Rock. There will be 3 stages, 70 bands & artists from Portugal and Brazil, as well as fashion shows, radical sports, restaurants and shops. Top international rock bands will brighten up your spirit daily in Parque da Bela Vista. The festival expects 120,000 visitors per day! www.rockinrio-lisboa.sapo.pt

First half of the month

Santarém (Lisboa region) - Feira Nacional da Agricultura (National Agriculture Fair)Beginning on the 1st Friday of June and lasting 10 days, this fair is considered one of Europe’s largest fairs in the field of agriculture. It celebrates the region’s rich traditional values with an international dance festival, a bull run, cattle herding, bullfights and horse riding contests, which includes the famous “Raid”, an endurance horseback ride.

Almada (Lisboa region) – Festival de Teatro de Almada – local theater festival

Batalha (Lisboa region) – Feira Internacional de Artesanato e Gastronomia e Festival do Vinho (International Handicrafts & Gastronomy Fair and Wine Festival) This fair features traditional cuisine, desserts, and handicrafts. The Wine Festival takes place near the Batalha Monastery and displays wine from the best vineyards in the region and its vast heritage of grape varieties.

Benavente (Lisboa region) – Festa da Sardinha Assada (Grilled Sardine Festival)

Almodôvar (Alentejo region)– FACAL – The arts & culture fair of Almodôvar

Bombarral (Lisboa region) – Festival do Vinho Português (Portuguese Wine Festival)

Constância (Lisboa region)– Pomonas Camonianas - These festivities annually celebrate Camões, one of Portugal’s most important poets, and born in Constância back in the 16th century. The festivities include a 16th century fair.

Estoril (Lisboa region)– Estoril Coast International Crafts Fair – 41st Edition Held on an open-air location beside the famous Estoril Casino, this traditional market is well known for its handicraft displays and for its performances of Portuguese folk music and dance. www.estorilcoast-tourism.com

Leiria (Lisboa region)– Temporada de Música antiga - This annual festival of ancient music is held in Leiria and the surrounding area offering a great musical experience.

Lisboa – Feira do Livro (Book Fair) - Lisbon’s Book Fair is the biggest event of its kind in Portugal and one of the great cultural occasions in the life of the city. The fair takes place in the open air in Eduardo VII Park at the top end of Avenida da Liberdade. Setúbal (Lisboa region) – FESTRÓIA - Festival Internacional de Cinema de TróiaThis is an important cultural event in which many famous personalities from the international cinema industry participate.
Vila Franca de Xira (Lisboa region) – Semana da Cultura Tauromáquica (The Art of Bullfighting Week)
Alcácer do Sal (Alentejo region) – PIMEL – Pine nut, honey, & regional sweets fair.
Almodôvar (Alentejo region) – FACAL – The arts & culture fair of Almodôvar
Évora (Alentejo region) – Feira de São João (St. John’s Fair)This is a large “market” of the city and of the Alentejo. The fair is officially recreated to reflect the 13th century. There will be economic, gastronomic, and cultural activities.

Lisboa) – Goa and the Grand Mogol - Exhibition at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation: This exhibition focuses on the first contacts between the Portuguese and the moguls. Ponte de Lima (North of Portugal) – “A Vaca das cordas” - This traditional festival takes place every year on the shore along the Lima River. The townspeople participate in a type of bullfight but the animal is kept under control with ropes.
9 - 10 Corpus Christi Day
Monção (North of Portugal) – Festa da Coca - This annual festival takes place Corpus Christi Day as it did in the Middle Ages. There will be a Medieval tournament between St. George and the Dragon (also known as the “Coca”), symbolizing the battle between Good and Evil.

Ponte de Lima (North of Portugal) – Festa do Corpo de Deus – Tapetes floridos(Corpus Christi Festival) Streets will be carpeted in various designs with a large array of flowers.

Lisboa– Festas da Cidade (Lisbon Festivities) - Being the birthplace of St. Anthony, Lisbon celebrates the saint’s birth during this period of time. In the historical centre, one can watch street entertainment ranging from theatre to popular music, classical and ethnic music, jazz, circus arts, mime, brass bands and traditional games. On the night of the 12th to the 13th, clubs and associations from the city’s different neighborhoods march down Avenida da Liberdade competing with one another in flashy, quick-stepping parades that include elaborate costumes, illuminated banners, and music. In the old districts of Lisbon, the streets become especially alive with lanterns, music, and crowds. In these parties – Arraiais – the people of Lisbon go to dance and eat sardines. www.ebahl.pt

All over Portugal – UEFA EURO 2004 – The European Football Championship is, in terms of prestige, the most important competition in the world football after the World Cup itself. In June/July 2004 all the world of football will focus on Portugal. The Opening will take place at the Antas Stadium (Oporto) on the 12th and the grand final at the Estádio da Luz Stadium in Lisbon on July the 4th. Porto– Festas de São João (St. John’s Festival) - The city annually commemorates this popular saint with secular traditions & customs. From the evening of the 23rd until the 24th, everyone is out on the streets carrying citron leaves & leeks and they participate in an animated battle. The festivities continue until the break of dawn and include a magnificent fireworks display over the Douro River followed, a few hours later, by a boat-race of traditional “rabelo” boats.
